Ulster - better known as Northern Ireland plus Donegal - has long been overlooked as a tourist destination. Its turbulent and often violent recent history made headlines around the world, but in the last decade peace has reigned and tourism has flourished. Belfast and Derry/Londonderry both have fascinating historical and political tours and are perhaps some of the most interesting city tours you could go on in Europe. Derry has been making a name for itself as a cultural hub, and has a strong arts scene and lively festivals throughout the year. Belfast however, is the best place in Ireland to do some shopping and is a great night out dining and drinking with a myriad of restaurants to choose from.
It's pretty obvious why this is the filming location of choice for the popular Game of Thrones series with the breath-taking scenery of the Causeway Coast and the sparsely populated wilds of County Donegal. One of the charms of the west of Ulster is the feeling of remoteness as you explore a wildly beautiful area far from the tourist crowds. Donegal is undoubtedly one of my favourite places in the world.
