Doolin Music House

Deep in the rocky Burren region in the west of Ireland lies the village of Doolin, a powerhouse of traditional Irish music and culture. The heaving pubs are fantastic places to get a fill of Irish music but on the outskirts of the village is a quite unique and intimate musical venue - Doolin Music House. This place easily ranks amongst our favourite Irish attractions.

Doolin Music House is a musical experience hosted by internationally renowned Irish folk musician Christy Barry and his wife and artist Sheila in their Doolin home. Over ninety minutes, Christy on the Irish flute and one or more of his musical mates will entertain with a number of tunes. In the true Irish tradition Christy likes to talk - in a good way! - and he'll tell you about the old times, muse over the changes - good and bad - and fill you in on the interesting characters from the Doolin music scene.

Whilst the music plays Sheila serves drinks and tasty canapes sauced from the local area (salmon and a selection of cheeses).

These amazing evenings are the perfect mix of everything that people want from a trip to Ireland. You get to meet the locals - and not in a prescribed or standoffish way but in a genuine and interactive one. Christy and his wife are incredibly warm and welcoming and love interaction. The action takes place in the couple's actual living room - a space that is obviously lived in and not just a stage for the entertainment. The house offers fantastic views over the Burren coast and to top it all off has one of the best views from a toilet that I've encountered.

This is also proper Irish music. You'll probably have heard umpteen Whiskey in the Jars down Dublin's Temple Bar or Galway's Shop Street - which is a great introduction into Ireland - but this is delves further and will give you a more lasting impression.

Christy and Sheila entertain on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings but they may also open for groups at other times. There are plenty of guesthouses in and around Doolin, otherwise it's ninety minutes to Galway and Limerick or an hour to Ennis.
